Title slide for workshop titled "One Party Consent Phone Call: The Undisputed Evidence in Your Case"

This workshop explores the use of one-party-consent recorded phone calls as an investigative tool in child sexual abuse cases. Participants will learn how to prepare victims, conduct effective calls, and use recorded statements to corroborate allegations and strengthen suspect interviews.

Suggested Audience: Law enforcement and prosecutors

Full Description: One-party-consent phone calls can be a powerful investigative tool in child sexual abuse cases, providing opportunities to obtain spontaneous statements, test allegations, and develop evidence before a suspect interview. This workshop examines how investigators can use these calls effectively while protecting the victim and preserving evidentiary integrity. Participants will learn how to prepare victims using trauma-informed practices, structure and conduct recorded calls without over-directing the conversation, and recognize statements that may corroborate, clarify, or refute allegations. The session also explores how information developed during a recorded call can shape subsequent suspect interviews, support charging decisions, and strengthen the overall investigation.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate best practices for preparing victims prior to a recorded call, with emphasis on trauma-informed communication, safety considerations, and evidentiary integrity.

  • Apply effective techniques for conducting recorded phone calls that elicit spontaneous statements capable of identifying, corroborating, or refuting allegations of sexual abuse.

  • Evaluate how recorded phone calls can be strategically used to strengthen suspect interviews, support charging decisions, and enhance overall case outcomes
