This session follows survivor Melanie Barton’s case from disclosure through trial and long-term impact, presented in conversation with forensic psychologist Dr. Timothy Saar. Together, they examine prosecution missteps, the effects of trial on victims, effective testimony preparation, and post-trial support.

Full Description: Go on a journey with Forensic Psychologist Dr. Timothy Saar and Survivor Advocate Melanie Barton as they unpack Melanie's case from initial disclosure, through trial, and detailing how her journey unfolded over the years. The following topics will be discussed in a conversational style between the presenters, combining real-life experience and research: common prosecution errors; how the trial process impacts the victim; preparing the victim for testimony; and helping the victim post-trial.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Examine the Forensic Interview Process (CAC model) from the lens of a survivor who was interviewed 20 years ago.

  • Delineate the impact the criminal justice process has on survivors of crime from both a personal and psychological perspective.

  • Identify the emotional/psychological impact described by research and experience from a survivor and a psychologist.
